An Inspector of police attached to the Mobile 32 unit, Abakaliki, has died from an accidental explosion of his own hand grenade in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State,Southeast Nigeria, police in the state said.
A report by HumAngle confirmed.
This came on the heels of reports today that a suicide bomber blew himself up in Afikpo town while trying to gain access into Amaizu/Amangballa Primary School but was turned back by the school security since he couldn’t justify his reason for visiting.
While clarifying the incident to HumAngle, Odah Loveth Obianuju, Police Public Relations Officer, Ebonyi State Command, said the unfortunate incident happened while the police officer was on duty.

The police spokesperson however did not give the name of the officer.
“There was no bomb incident and there was no suicide bomber but while I should accept regrettably that there was an explosion is because an officer has died today as a result of an accidental discharge of his own hand grenade when his hand hit the grenade hung on the trouser of his uniform and it exploded and killed him,” Obinuju told HumAngle.
According to the police PRO, the officer was dispatched on a special duty to Afikpo because of the current security situation in the state.
She urged them the public to mourn with the police command instead of alleging a suicide bomber attack.
