Cyriel Dessers called up to replace Odion Ighalo on Eagles’ AFCON’21 squad

Feyenoord striker Cyriel Dessers has been called up by coach Austin Eguavoen to replace Al Shabab striker Odion Jude Ighalo on the squad.

The Nigerian International was called upon after Qatar based side Al Shabab prevented their topscorer Ighalo from honouring Eagles’ call up to play in the Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria saying the invitation to request the player’s absence came late.

Dessers coming on board will be the fifth change the Eagles will make to their final squad list released last month with two out of the previous four being as a result of this same issue.

Watford prevented Emmanuel Dennis from going to Afcon’21 saying the call up was late and Napoli reported Victor Osimhen is still injured and that he has tested positive to Covid-19 while reports indicate the Striker will be available in January after Covid return. They were subsequently replaced by Peter Olayinka and Henry Onyekuru.

Meanwhile the other two earlier replacements have been in the defensive area due to injuries. Leon Balogun and Shehu Abdullahi were replaced subsequently by Tyrone Ebuehi and Semi Ajayi.

Former Eagles gaffer, Gernot Rohr, had given the former Genk and Heracles hitman his Eagles debut in the 1-1 draw against Tunisia on October 13, 2020 during an international friendly game.

However, the Belgian dual-national has not been invited to the national team ever since, having fallen behind the pecking order to former teammate at club level Paul Onuachu who is also out injured.

Dessers has scored 10 goals in 27 games across all competitions this season for Feyenoord.
