AFCON: Eagles will play attractive football — Eguavoen

Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has promised his team will play attractive football at the forthcoming African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Eagles start their Nations Cup Group D campaign against seven-time champions Egypt on January 11 in Garoua, before facing Sudan four days later and then Guinea-Bissau on January 19.

Eguavoen, who replaced Gernot Rohr recently as Eagles coach, days building a formidable team ahead of the tournament is his priority.

“Nigeria has been known for flair and that’s why our strength has always been on the wings. That’s where our strength lies. Our wing play and technique on-and-off the ball is key.

“Having a good spine of the team is very crucial ahead of the tournament, for us to play expansive football.

“We have intelligent players, who will play the way we want them to play.

“We want all 11 players working together. We will play with 11, attack with 11 and defend with 11.”

Eguavoen added that Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi had a lot to offer the Eagles, and went ahead to tip the 25-year-old to become “one of the best defensive players in the world.”

“When I see Ndidi in the midfield, not 100 per cent Sunday Oliseh, but I think he is on his way to becoming one of the best defensive players in the world,” Eguavoen continued.

“But he’s holding back as far as I am concerned. He’s got a lot to still give, but I think he is holding back.

“I have spoken to him on one or two occasions.”

The Nigerian Football Federation is expected to announce the Eagles’ provisional squad for the AFCON tournament in the coming day.
